Quick history to share

The mansion was built in 1930, when Huey Long was governor. He schemed his way into building the mansion, making up stories of infestation to justify tearing down the home on the site, and using his power to grab $150,000 to build the replacement.

Nine governors resided in the Old Governor’s Mansion during an era of raucous politics and grand gestures. Jimmie Davis, famous for popularizing “You Are My Sunshine,” was the last governor to live in the mansion.

Designed by New Orleans architects, the mansion is mostly Georgian, which has its roots in English history, but it also has French and Louisiana elements as well, such as the French mansard roof and the state seal surrounded by classical Roman garlands above the front door.

Students will see a hidden staircase, the grand ballroom, a water-cooled solarium, the Rose Garden, and a replica of the Oval Office.

Louisiana’s Old State Capitol

Please also consider a visit to our companion museum, the Old State Capitol. Located on the same side of the street and just three blocks toward the river, the Old State Capitol also offers FREE admission. Note that the OSC has different operating times.
